What Is Red Light Therapy?
Red light therapy (RLT), also called photobiomodulation, uses low-level red and near-infrared (NIR) light to stimulate cellular processes. It’s non‑thermal (doesn’t heat tissue) and is applied with LEDs or low‑power lasers.
How it works
Red (about 630–700 nm) and NIR (about 800–1100 nm) light penetrates skin and is absorbed by cellular chromophores (notably mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase).
This can increase mitochondrial ATP production, reduce oxidative stress, and modulate inflammation and signaling pathways.
